"Korean Tyson" is headed to Las Vegas for a golden opportunity.
South Korean welterweight Ko Seok Hyun (10-2) will fight on episode four of this year's season of Dana White's Contender Series on September 3rd. Ko announced the news on his Instagram story today, June 4th. The fight was originally reported by MMA Matchmaker on X/Twitter.
His opponent will be Brazil's Igor Cavalcanti (9-0), a 26-year old out of Natal that has never seen the final bell. The fight will be contested at welterweight.
Ko Seok Hyun is arguably the top welterweight prospect out of South Korea. The reigning AFC (South Korean promotion) middleweight champion has won three straight by knockout or TKO, toggling between welterweight and middleweight. His six career knockouts have nearly set him up with multiple international opportunities this year already. At first, he was in discussions to fight last Road to UFC last month. After that didn't pan out, a fight nearly came together at Naiza FC 61 on May 18th.
Now, this opportunity to sign with the world's largest MMA promotion is official.
For Cavalcanti, he's fought exclusively for smaller, regional Brazilian promotions thus far in his MMA career. He holds seven wins by knockout or TKO, and two by submission- a perfect finishing rate through nine fights.
Dana White's Contender Series season eight has yet to be announced by the UFC, and while the series typically airs on ESPN+, further information will be released over the coming months.
